Sri Tallapaka Annamacharya / Annamayya popularly known as “Andhra Pada Kavita Pitamaha”, is one of the great poets and Hindu Saint of 15th century (1408 – 1503). He is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu’s Nandakam (sword). He is the earliest Indian music composer who composed over 32000 Sankirthana’s and Padams in Carnatic music. These were considered floral offerings to Lord Venkateswara and his consort, Alamelu Manga Thayer. Out of which only a 12000 are well known today. Most of these were in praise of Lord Venkateswara, the deity of Tirumala. His compositions are penned under 3 different categories: Sringara (romantic), Vyiragya and Adhyatma(spiritual or bhakti).
He also composed songs on different subjects such as Philosophy, Morality, Dharma, Righteousness, Lullabies /Jola Paatalu, Jajaras, Suvvi Songs, Dampulla Songs, Elapadas and more.
Apart from this, he is well known for his 12 Satakas, Dwipada Ramayana, Sankeerthana Lakshanam (Characteristics of Sankeerthana), Sringaara Manjari and Venkatachala Mahatyam.
His compositions can be identified with a signature word ‘Venkatachala’ or ‘Venkatapathe’.
Annamacharya’s Son Thirumalacharya has replicated around 14000 compositions, few other works of annamacharya from palm leaves on to Copper Plates found in a rock built cell named as “Sankeerthana Bhandagaram” in front of Tirumala Temple Hundi, which was unnoticed for 400 years.
